Queen Carpenter Bee - I know these bees are great pollinators, but they are destroying the wood on my house, not to mention - they are frighteningly loud, really huge, and the drones love to dive-bomb anything that moves.

Juvenile Downy Woodpecker - female molting - she shook off a big feather right before I took this shot of her.

Great Egrets - I spotted these guys in a small muddy area on the side of the road. I pulled over and tried my best to get a few shots - these are firsts for me.

Birds : My favorite visitors from the past year.

Squirrels :

Juvenile Downy Woodpeckers - Summer 2008 : These young Downy Woodpeckers have been very tolerant of my presence right from the start. They let me get fairly close, and often seem to pose for me. I've grown especially attached to this little pair. Watching their daily battles over the suet is really entertaining!
They quickly became daily visitors in midsummer when as ruffled fledglings they started picking at the suet feeder learning to eat on their own.
I believe they are from the same clutch. Their parents were regulars and I watched the adult male feed them as they begged in a nearby tree.
They've now molted into adult feather and are still coming to the feeder together.

Swallowtail Butterfly : I watched this butterfly come to my deck flowers every day. Each day I wondered if he'd survive to the next. His once colorful wings were fading and chipping away. Watching him disappear before my eyes made me sad and reminded me that summer is quickly fading away as well.

Backyard Birds : These are the regular visitors to my backyard in north western New Jersey. Keeping the feeders full becomes challenging, but the entertainment these birds provide is virtually endless. My backyard would be pretty boring without these regulars! I'm looking forward to fall migration as the bird landscape changes with the seasons.

Ruby Throated Hummingbirds : Activity is finally picking up at the Hummingbird feeders. This is my first season trying to photograph them.
I think learning to get a decent shot of this bird is going to take some time.
I've seen more coming to the feeders this year so hopefully I'll have time to keep at it before they
move on for the winter.

By the end of September there were maybe two stragglers still fattening up at the feeders and persistent Salvia plants. The first week in October I had to travel. When I got home the last of the Hummingbirds were long gone.
I'll have to wait until next year to practice capturing these really entertaining little jewels.

Central Park Zoo : I love hiking in Central Park. This unusually warm day in February 2008 I tried out my new camera and lens for the first time on some of the zoo residents.
